So I'm on a Low Sodium Diet ...

Discussion about my experiences in starting a low sodium diet.

Getting Started

Contains a VERY quick and dirty guide to general sodium content by type of food. There are lots of exceptions. Learning to read the nutritional labels in the best way to really know what you are getting.

Low in sodium

Moderate sodium - use carefully (in this group I typically either buy low sodium versions of the products or make my own)

High in sodium

Choosing Foods For A Low Sodium Diet

General guidelines for reducing the amount of sodium in your diet.

Bear in mind that just following these guidelines may not be enough depending on how low an amount of sodium you are targeting. You may also find that you need to pick and choose, eating some higher sodium items that you can't find an easy replacement for. For example, I occasionally eat cheese such as cheddar or mozzarella that is higher in sodium than I'd like because I can't easily get a low sodium version at what I consider a reasonable price. On the other hand, I almost never eat commercially prepared bread and other baked goods.
