Abbreviations Used in Recipes

The recipe software I use has it's own set of abbreviations that it uses when I print out the recipe for a newsletter or web page. Most of them are pretty easy to figure out. Some of them aren't. The following list is to the best of my knowledge a complete list of abbreviations you may come across. (Actually it's a pretty good bet I'll never use kilograms, but seeing it should make our non-U.S. people feel a little more at home.)

bunch

Recipe Substitutions

Here are some tricks and substitutions you can make to reduce the amount of sodium, increase the flavor of your food, decrease the cholesterol, etc.

This section contains information on use of herbs and spices to enhance the flavor of different kinds of low sodium dishes and lower sodium replacements you can use in your favorite recipes.

Cooking Terms

A quick run through of what I mean when I say to do a particular thing.

Definitions of some of the more commonly used cooking terms, which you may or may not find in the recipes here. These were culled from a number of sites across the web. Very few are original definitions of mine.

Cooking Term     Definition
Al dente (sample of one of the more than 65 cooking terms available) "To the tooth," in Italian. The pasta is cooked just enough to maintain a firm, chewy texture

Low Fat Frying

This section contains information on reducing the amount of fat in your fried and sauted foods.

Oven Temperature Equivalents

For those of you using the Celsius scale, here are the equivalent temperatures to the Fahrenheit ones I use.

Temperature Fahrenheit
Temperature Celsius
100 degrees F
38 degrees C

Gadgets I Use

The following are some of the tools that I use in cooking. Some are used very often and some very seldom, but all help make things a little easier or quicker. Click on the name to see a picture of the item. Why are some things here and other not? No reason except that most of these are things I considered a little less standard than a stove, oven, grill and mixer.

This section contains information on more than 20 gadgets I use on a more or less regular basis, from Bread Machine to Waffle Maker.
